The common treatments used in the past include waxing, shaving and depilatory creams, all of which are effective but can be painful and messy and are in fact only temporary. Electrolysis has over the years been the preferred and most popular alternative.
At the Re-nu Body Clinic Medical we use the FDA approved Lumenis Lightsheer Diode Laser, a state-of-the-art system specially designed to remove and reduce unwanted hair faster, less painfully, and more reliably than previous methods. At the Re-nu Body Clinic Medical we recommend the Lumenis Lightsheer Diode Laser system to treat most hair and all skin types and offering permanent hair reduction and removal for both men and women.
Meladine is the only product on the market that has been proven to aid lasers in treating non pigmented hair (white, grey, blond, etc) for laser hair removal. Meladine is an all-natural, safe and gentle product that naturally increases the pigmentation in a patient’s hair follicle, allowing hair removal lasers to effectively target and cauterize the hair.
What is Light Sheer Diode Laser and how does it work?
LightSheer Diode Laser is an extremely safe and effective, highly advanced method of removing unwanted body and facial hair.
The Laser System delivers a pulsed beam which is absorbed at the base of the hair shaft. Here it is converted to heat, thereby disabling the hair follicle.
How many treatments are necessary?
Unfortunately there is no single permanent hair removal treatment currently available. We generally recommend a course of six to eight treatments. During your initial consultation, the nurse will complete a thorough assessment, discuss desired outcomes and recommend a treatment plan, tailored to meet your individual requirements.
Is the treatment permanent?
The treatment achieves long term permanent and stable hair removal. On average 90-95% hair reduction is achieved. With each successive treatment you will notice a difference in the number and density of hair re-growth. Once the initial treatment period is complete, you may find a few hairs re-grow over a period of time. Top-up treatments may be required (typically once or twice a year). Re-nu charge a nominal fee for top-up treatments for a period of 5 years.
How long must the hair be before I can come in for a test patch?
The hair in the treated area must be in the hair follicle and showing above the surface of the skin. Any excess hair length will be trimmed or shaved by the Laser Nurse.
Can I still remove hair between treatments?
You may shave, trim or bleach hair between treatments. However, you shouldn’t pluck, wax or in any way remove the hairs from the follicles.
Can all areas be treated?
Virtually all areas of the body can be treated. The nurse will discuss this with you during your initial consultation. However, we do not treat hairy moles.
What does it feel like?
Most people tolerate the treatment very well, describing the feeling as a mild sting for a fraction of a second. However, you should bear in mind that pain thresholds vary throughout the body and that some people are more sensitive to pain than others.
The laser features a cooling device, which helps to relieve any discomfort during treatment. If required, topical anesthetic cream may be used to reduce the stinging sensation. Post treatment, cooling gel is applied to the area.
How long does the treatment take?
Treatment times vary. While some areas can be treated in only a few minutes, areas such as the back or legs require around an hour. As a guide, the underarms and bikini lines takes around 15 minutes.
Who performs the treatment?
A fully qualified Practioner, who is registered with CHAI (The Health Care Commission) and highly experienced in the use of the LightSheer Diode Laser System. All our nurses are kept current on the latest literature and receive on-going training.
Will I experience any side effects following treatment?
You may experience a slight sun burnt feeling and some inflammation of the treated area for a couple of hours after treatment. Applying ice packs or aloe vera gel to the treated area will help relieve this. Any redness normally resolves by the next day and can be covered with a little make up.
How do I know if I am suitable for Light Sheer Diode Laser treatment?
Most people can benefit from the treatment. Dark hair (which contains more pigment) responds best of all, as opposed to fair or grey hair. During your consultation a test patch to check your hair and skin type suitability for the LightSheer Laser will be completed by the nurse.
Female patients with hirsutism may be treated. However, due to the underlying cause this may mean on-going treatments are necessary. We recommend that pregnant women are not treated.
Some medical conditions and drugs causing photosensitivity are contra-indicative to laser treatment. The nurse will be able to discuss this with you in more detail during your initial consultation.
Is the treatment completely safe?
A wide range of medical specialists have used lasers for well over ten years and there is no evidence to date that suggests any long-term side effects. While there is a slight chance of irritation and pigmentation changes, these are rare due to the type of lasers we use and the level of training provided for our staff.
Is the Light Sheer Diode Laser used for treating anything else?
We also use the laser to treat pseudofolliculitis barbae (ingrown hairs) and thread veins of the legs
Testimonials
N.Bibi (Birmingham)
I was scared and embarrassed when I arrived at the clinic as I didn’t know what to expect, but all the staff were
very pleasant and helpful. The treatment itself was very quick and was less painful than treatments I’ve had
previously like waxing and electrolysis, and less messy.
Helena Rosswhite (Solihull)
The treatment was explained in full to me, how the laser works, what to do between treatments and what to expect.
I was very impressed. I was worried about the treatment but was put at ease and felt very comfortable with the
friendly specialist.
